Statement on Security Breach at Teterboro Airport

Early this morning, a young woman drove her Jeep through the cyclone fence that separates Route 46 from the parked aircraft at Teterboro Airport, and crashed into a fueled parked jet. Congressman Steve Rothman's statement follows:

(Washington, DC)- "Today's accident is yet another indication that Teterboro Airport is a disaster waiting to happen. If an 18-year-old can accidentally breach the security fence and drive straight onto the tarmac into a fully-fueled aircraft, just imagine what a psychopath or terrorist could do.

While the young woman in this incident was clearly the wrongdoer, we must not ignore the security risks at Teterboro that her accident exposed. It is the responsibility of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials to do everything possible to make Teterboro Airport as safe as possible.

We are lucky that this latest reminder about the potential for disaster at Teterboro was so minor, but it isn't enough to sit and wait for tragedies. I have been in touch today with officials at the Port Authority and Teterboro Airport. Action must be taken now to ensure a safer, more secure Teterboro Airport."
