Rothman: Is Teterboro Airport Hazardous to Your Health?
On March 13, the Coalition for Public Health & Safety is hosting a meeting to discuss air quality concerns at Teterboro Airport. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Environ Corporation will update the NY/NJ Port Authority, the NJ Meadowlands Commission and others about the status of an air quality study that began this year. Rep. Steve Rothman's (NJ-9) statement follows:
"Aircraft are noisy, dangerous, and dirty. Just how dirty and how dangerous are questions everyone wants answered, especially those who live around Teterboro Airport. That's why I continue to fight for a 25% reduction in flights at Teterboro Airport to protect the health and safety of residents.
"The more flights that come in and out, the more toxins parents and children are potentially exposed to and the more likely the Airport is to see a serious accident. After last February's accident and multiple incidents already this year, a disaster at Teterboro Airport is only a matter of time.
"The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to ignore these concerns, even though the Port Authority (PA) has indicated a readiness to reduce flights at Teterboro. As we wait for the final results of Environ's study, we shouldn't continue to gamble with people's safety. The Port Authority should move forward to reduce the number of flights at Teterboro Airport now - despite the FAA's indifference to local concerns and objections to the PA's plans. When the PA acts, I will be there to support them."
